• GAS-PERMEABLE CONTACT LENSES

Specialised Lens Fittings

Rigid gas permeable (RGP) contact lenses, often known as hard contact lenses, are designed for patients with conditions that cause irregularities in the cornea. Common conditions like keratoconus or those following corneal transplant surgery can lead to such irregularities.

RGP lenses improve vision by providing a smooth, regular surface for light to pass through. Rather than light hitting the uneven cornea, it meets the spherical surface of the lens. This is why soft contact lenses aren’t effective – they mould to the shape of the irregular cornea instead of providing a uniform surface.

With proper care, RGP lenses can be quite durable and can last for years without needing a prescription change.

Benefits of
RGP Lenses

  1. Superior Vision Quality: RGP lenses offer sharper vision compared to soft lenses due to their rigid nature.
  2. Durability and Longevity: Made from durable materials, RGP lenses are long-lasting and resistant to deposits.
  3. High Oxygen Permeability: RGP lenses allow more oxygen to reach the cornea than traditional soft lenses, promoting better eye health.
  4. Custom Fit: Each pair of RGP lenses is custom-fitted to the patient’s eyes, ensuring a comfortable and secure fit that enhances visual performance.

Who Can
Benefit

RGP lenses are suitable for a wide range of patients, including those with:

  • Astigmatism: GP lenses provide better correction for astigmatism compared to soft lenses.
  • Keratoconus: Individuals with keratoconus benefit from the rigid structure of GP lenses, which helps in reshaping the cornea.
  • Corneal Graft Recipients: Recipients often experience irregular corneal surfaces, leading to visual distortions. RGP lenses provide a smooth optical surface that helps correct these irregularities, offering clearer and more stable vision compared to soft lenses. Their oxygen permeability also supports corneal health, making them a preferred choice for post-graft visual rehabilitation.

Proper Care & Maintenance

Follow these care and maintenance tips:

  • Daily Cleaning: Clean your lenses daily with the recommended GP lens solution to remove debris and deposits.
  • Proper Storage: Store lenses in a clean, dry case with fresh GP lens solution. Avoid using tap water or saliva to clean or store your lenses.
  • Regular Replacement: Even though GP lenses are durable, follow your optometrist’s advice on replacement schedules to maintain optimal eye health.
  • Regular Check-ups: Schedule regular eye exams to ensure your lenses fit well and your prescription is up-to-date.
